Weebs is a 2 ½ year old, neutered, sealpoint Siamese
with gorgeous blue eyes. He was
rescued at 6 weeks of age from a high kill shelter, where he was deemed
unadopotable and slated for euthanasia. Weebs was born deaf and with Cerebellar
Hypoplasia (CH). CH occurs when a feral, stray, or unvaccinated mother has
distemper while her kittens are still in her womb. Damage to the kittens'
cerebellum, the part of the brain that is used for coordination and balance, is
permanent. Though there is no treatment, CH cats have a normal life expectancy,
and can lead happy, long lives.
Like other cats with CH, Weebs was wobbly and
uncoordinated as a kitten. In fact, this is where his name came from…if anyone
remembers the old commercial jingle for a toy called Weebles: “Weebles wobble,
but they don’t fall down.” The
degree to which cats are affected can vary widely, and Weebs has very mild
symptoms. As an adult, it is barely noticeable, and is most evidenced by his
inability to leap onto counters, tendency to run in circles when excited, and
very mild tremors when he is really trying to focus on something.
While we know he is not quite right, Weebs has no
idea he is anything other then normal. He loves to play with cat toys of all
types, and his favorite are the interactive ones where he can play with “his”
people. He has a voracious
appetite, and is a little pudgy as a result. Although he can be a bit messy
with he eats (he loves to dig in his bowl and fling the kibble around), he has
perfect, fastidious litter box habits. Extremely affectionate, Weebs loves to
sleep next to (or on top of) you, and during the day will follow you around the
house, frequently asking for attention .He is also fascinated by water….whenever
anyone is in the shower, he is sitting right there, mesmerized by the water
drops.
Weebs plays rough and very enthusiastically. It is strongly recommended he be
adopted as an only cat. He has been raised with 4 extra large dogs, and lived
with countless other foster puppies and adult dogs, so a cat savvy canine
household would be fine. Weebs would be best with older children or adults. He
absolutely must be an indoor only cat—due to his deafness, fearlessness, and
lack of common cat sense, he would be at extreme risk outdoors.
